So, all this talk about next gen networks and revolutionary technologies is awesome and, to the geeks out there, a little awe-inspiring.  However, at the end of the day, when it comes to inter-carrier voice, all of this new fangled technology results in one, somewhat boring, somewhat uninspiring outcome….increased efficiency.

The voice communications world, while rife with new applications and new communications experiences is, quite ordinary.  Voice is a commodity.  Just like all the other commodities we are familiar with, there is very little differentiation between commodities, and there is little differentiation in voice.   In order to succeed in today’s voice marketplace, you have to be extremely efficient.  How is efficiency defined in today’s voice marketplace?
