Focusing on Margin

At the end of the day. After all the talk, all the rates, all the contracts, all the sales meetings, all the dinners and drinks, all the routing set up, all the testing...what really matters is the margin carriers make on their interconnect voice. Whether you are a retailer, mobile provider, pure-play wholesaler….all that matters is margin. That’s what we are all doing this for, right? Well, if that’s the case. Then let’s get real and focus in on margin.  

Margin is made based on controlling where and when you route the calls to your supplier list. Have an arbitrage opportunity? Better exploit it. Need quality but want to optimize for margin? Better be able to blend. Need to stop dialer traffic from crippling your network? Better have a way to identify and block dialer traffic. Need to support EU/Non-EU origination traffic?  Better have the ability to process origination and termination rate decks. The list goes on and on. Bottom line is that if you want to improve your margin, you need to have one heck of an OSS & BSS Solution that is designed specifically for interconnect voice.

This isn’t rocket science, but it isn’t shoveling snow either. GCS has been doing this in one form or another since 1997. Back when VoIP was a fledgling technology being rejected by the tier Ones to today where it is the standard. We’ve seen it. We’ve lived it. We’ve experienced the heights and the failures. We’ve seen companies come and go. The successful ones have been the retailers (because they own the subscribers) and the ones that focused on margin. Because, at the end of the day, margin is what it is all about.

So, where are you with your margin? Is it great? Could it be better? Here’s a clue as to whether or not you are leaving margin on the table.

Is your interconnect Voice OSS & BSS more than 5 years old? Then you might not be maximizing your margin.

Do you only make rate changes 1 per day and never on the weekends? Then you probably aren’t maximizing margin.

Do you still use just plain old Least Cost Routing (LCR)?
