If you are lucky enough to be on our email distribution list, you recently saw an email from us about Speed. We featured a reference to the 1980's cult classic Movie, "Top Gun" and that well known quote, “ I feel the need, the need for speed”. Our goal with the email was to bring attention to an often repeated challenge that many carriers/service providers communicate to us. They just can’t access data fast enough and have their inter-carrier voice operations respond quick enough to the changing dynamics of the industry. The inter-carrier voice industry resembles any commodity based industry where prices are constantly changing, and the underlying buyers and sellers are constantly changing. Those two realities of the inter-carrier voice world impose complexities on carriers and service providers. These complexities can often seem unsolvable because their back-office systems are incapable of processing all of the information required to determine what is happening in the marketplace.
What they need is a Big Data based OSS & BSS Solution. What does this mean? It means that the OSS & BSS Solution is leveraging the speed and scalability of big data architecture throughout the platform. So,it’s not just a reporting or analytics capability. It’s also leveraged as part of the routing. While we never talk in terms of Least Cost Routing (LCR) because that is a 20th century term, carriers need to build routing policies and schema based on a variety of data points that include price, but also includes:

This has to be synthesized at an atomic level, in near real-time, and the results have to be taken in, collectively, for a determination to be made on how the network should adapt. Doing this across 100,000 or 1,000,000 calls a day is challenging. Doing it when you are processing 10M or even 100M calls per day exceeds the capabilities of almost every platform out there in the marketplace. This means carriers are processing information at a fraction of the speed they need to operate effectively. Hence, the “need for speed”. So, if you are looking at improving your inter-carrier voice operations, speed is going to be at, or near, the top of your list, as it should be. And when you look for solutions to deliver the speed you need, make sure you understand how they are leveraging big data throughout their platforms.
